What to Do in an Emergency
If you are experiencing a dental emergency, the first thing you should do is call The Dentist House. We will arrange for you to come in on the same day you call. Depending on the extent of your injury, we can see you within a matter minutes when you arrive.
If you are experiencing pain in your mouth, you are not alone. Many patients experience some form of tooth pain throughout their life. Tooth decay is the number one cause of tooth pain in patients and is likely the cause of your pain if no trauma has occurred to your mouth.
Depending on how advanced the decay is, you may experience more pain than someone whose cavity just formed. When you do experience pain, relax, take an over the counter medication when needed, and place a cold pack on your cheek. Try to avoid eating sweets on the tooth in question, as this will increase the intensity of pain.
Another common dental emergency is having your tooth knocked out. Adults and children can have their tooth knocked out for a variety of reasons; it doesn’t take much to knock the tooth out. If you find yourself in a situation where the tooth has fallen out, recover it as quickly as possible.
When you attempt to pick up your tooth, never grab it by the root as this can damage your tooth. You are free to rinse the tooth off if you find dirt on it, but you should never remove the tissues. If you are not comfortable rinsing the tooth off, just bring it into our office with you.
If you can place the tooth back in your mouth, do so. If you cannot, then place the tooth in a small container and cover the tooth with just enough milk to keep it moist. You can take an over the counter medication to alleviate pain you may be experiencing from the incident.
