We will see you the same day when an emergency happens! Never hesitate to call.

What Are the Most Common Dental Emergencies?

There are many different types of dental emergencies that can occur. While some of them are more severe than the rest, it is important that no matter what, you seek dental care. Consider the following common dental emergencies and what you can do to alleviate pain.

Tooth Pain

If you notice severe pain in your tooth, it is time to make a same-day appointment! Many patients notice that chewing is painful. Often temperatures and movement of the jaw can also stimulate extreme pain. If you are unable to chew, sleep, or go about your daily routine without pain, you are having a dental emergency.

Often the cause is deep decay or an unknown fracture in your tooth. With some quick images, we can find the problem and get you a solution! In the meantime, try a gentle saltwater rinse and take an over-the-counter pain reliever to find some relief until we can see you in the office.

Tooth Fracture

If your tooth has been fractured, you will experience localized pain in the area. Depending on the severity of the fracture, you may have a complete break or a hairline crack. Either way, this is a dental emergency that needs to be handled immediately to prevent further problems. The Dentist House will treat a fracture carefully. Our treatment typically includes a crown to protect the tooth and restore your smile.

If you are in pain from the fracture, take an over the counter anti-inflammatory medication to help reduce pain and swelling in the area. Avoid eating hard foods or chewing roughly as you may break a piece of the tooth off.

Knocked Out Tooth

One of the scariest emergencies is when your tooth is knocked out. When your tooth becomes dislodged from your mouth, we will attempt to restore the tooth for you. It is important that you call us right away to schedule your same-day appointment.

Once the tooth is knocked out, attempt to recover it as quickly as possible. You can rinse the tooth off, but it is important that you do not touch the root or remove the tissues from the tooth. Place the tooth back into your mouth when possible and head to our office. If you cannot place the tooth back in your mouth, place the tooth in a container and cover the tooth with milk or saliva.

Broken or Loose Dental Appliance

We place dental appliances, like dental crowns and bridges, to restore your smile, but they aren’t permanent fixtures. These appliances can break or become loose. When that happens, you are experiencing a dental emergency!

Call us right away so that we can make your appointment. In the meantime, grab some temporary dental adhesive, like denture cream, and try to place your appliance back in your mouth. When you come in, we will help you get the restoration back in it’s correct place with a more stable bonding material.
