What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure that is used to treat a severely decayed or infected tooth. The root canal procedure is designed to repair the damage and prevent the tooth from being lost. The actual words root canal mean the cavity that is in the center of your tooth. Depending on how severe the decay is, you may experience a great deal of pain.

What Happens During the Root Canal Procedure?

When you come in for your root canal procedure, you may be worried about what is going to happen. Try to stay calm. We will take good care of you!
The procedure will start out with Dr. Mamaliger using a local anesthetic to numb the area around your tooth. The numbing agent will prevent any type of feeling in the tooth and allow the dentist to work on the area without you being in pain.

Once your tooth is numb, the dentist will gain access to the inside of your tooth through the crown. Once Dr. Mamaliger has gained access, he will then remove the diseased pulp and nerve from the center or the tooth. Once the pulp and nerve are completely removed, the tooth will be cleaned out and any present infections treated. The tooth will then be sealed with a special filling, and a crown is placed over the top to help protect the tooth.

Dr. Mamaliger is experienced in root canal procedures, and he takes the time to ensure the entire tooth is cleaned out prior to sealing it. If the tooth is not cleaned from the bacteria, then it is possible for another infection to occur.

Signs You Need a Root Canal

While not everyone will show the same signs of needing a root canal procedure, you might notice some of the following symptoms:

  • Pain when chewing with the tooth
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Tooth pain
  • Discoloration of the tooth
  • Swelling of the gums near the tooth

I’m Scared It Will Hurt

Many patients are scared that the root canal procedure is going to hurt, so they avoid having the procedure performed. While the name and procedure may sound scary, a root canal is nothing to fear. When you come in for your appointment, we will walk you through the process and explain everything to you. The root canal procedure is similar to having a cavity filled, which means you’ll be back to normal in no time. You can also request one of our sedation options to make yourself more comfortable.
